Oxy is dedicated to providing a safe and healthy workplace throughout our worldwide operations

Safety

Safety is a core value at Oxy. Through proactive leadership, programs and procedures, Oxy consistently ranks among the safest companies in the U.S. and among our industry peers. Our 2010 employee Injury and Illness Incidence Rate (IIR) was 0.40, our second-best result in company history. For 15 consecutive years, our employee IIR has been less than 1.0. The most recent data available (for 2009) from the American Petroleum Institute (API) indicate that the average IIR for U.S. exploration and production company employees is 0.47, while the average for ACC midsize companies, which include OxyChem, is 1.12. Oxy’s employee IIR was nine times better than the average IIR of 3.6 for all of U.S. industry, based on the most recent U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data (for 2009).

In 2010, there were no employee or contractor occupational fatalities at Oxy facilities.  Oxy’s 2010 worldwide Lost Time Case Rate1, which represents the annual number of cases per 100 workers that resulted in an employee being unable to return to work or perform normal duties the day after an occupational injury or illness, was 0.24 — more than 7.5 times better than the rate for U.S. industry overall.

Oxy’s business segments rely on service contractors for specialized or short-term work. HES performance is an important factor in the selection of contractors throughout our worldwide supply chain. We monitor the performance of contractors working for Oxy, requiring notification of injuries and plans to prevent recurrence.

Contractors working full-time for Oxy have strong safety performance compared to contractors doing similar work for others, based on BLS data for the construction sector. Oxy’s 2010 consolidated worldwide full-time contractor IIR was 0.78 — our second-best ever, following record performance in 2009. Oxy's 2010 contractor IIR is more than five times better than the 2009 IIR for the U.S. construction industry overall.  Over the past five years, Oxy’s contractor IIR has improved by 37 percent. This strong performance reflects the unified commitment of Oxy and contractor management and employees to an injury-free workplace.

Oxy’s businesses continue to expand job safety observations, vehicle safety programs, dissemination of lessons learned, and training and reinforcement of key procedures to identify, increase awareness of, and reduce hazards that have the potential to cause severe injuries. Superior performance is driven by a safety culture and a HESMS that are integrated throughout our operations and embraced by our workforce, including both employees and contractors. Safety is good business and everyone's responsibility.
