Releases and Transfers

For certain wastes and other materials, OxyChem submits Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) data to the EPA. For 2009 (the most recent report year), total reportable releases and transfers to permitted off-site facilities for destruction or disposal amounted to 6.8 million pounds, a 7-percent decrease from 2008. The majority of this decrease is due to the completion of dismantling operations at one location. The significant decrease from 2006 is primarily attributable to the resumption of operation in 2008 of a recycling unit at one plant site. While this unit was being refurbished in 2006 and 2007, there was an increase in OxyChem's transfers to permitted off-site facilities. TRI reporting volumes also change due to plant acquisitions and divestitures.  For example, OxyChem acquired two chemical plants in 2005, one of which disposes of waste on-site, and another in 2009. OxyChem’s total releases relative to manufacturing production remain low.
