Occidental's interns have countless opportunities to make their mark. As an intern, I appreciated the opportunity to work on a meaningful project. My project involved helping Occidental sign a new chemical contract by organizing and executing a trial of different vendors’ foamer surfactant to determine which product unloaded gas wells most efficiently. Whether it was becoming more familiarized with cap-strings, making sure that the vendors and production coordinators were on the same page, or putting together my final recommendation, I was given a great deal of responsibility and learned how to successfully manage a project from start to finish.
One of the most valuable parts of my internship was gaining hands-on experience in the field. I enjoyed learning in a non-academic, real-world setting. Being on-site while coil tubing and slick line units were actually working, for example, helped me to better understand how they are implemented and the type of work for which they are used.
When I received my first internship offer from Occidental in 2012, I was ecstatic. The company had a great reputation, and I was eager to get out of the classroom for some hands-on experience. My summer with the company actually exceeded my extremely high expectations. This summer, I am a repeat intern at the OxyChem VCM plant in Ingleside, Texas. I have been given many exciting projects: completing a project scope for new heat exchangers, comparing quench filter cleaning frequency to various inlet impurities, designing an experiment for improvement in our wastewater facility, and creating a scope of requirements to increase the flow of chlorine into one of our reactors.
One of the greatest things about working at the plant is that everyone is welcoming and helpful, I am not treated as just “an intern.” My suggestions are sought out and respected. My mentor is very supportive, and I am proud to say that my project will add value to the company. Occidental gave me the opportunity to grow as an engineer and to learn a wealth of information.
My summer experience assured me that I have chosen the perfect company and career. The possibilities are endless with Occidental, and I cannot wait to see where my career will take me.
My internship experience with Occidental was an exciting, challenging and rewarding time. The internship program is well-organized and presents each person with an opportunity to learn about Occidental and the oil and gas industry and, at the same time, showcase one’s abilities and efforts.
As a reservoir engineering intern in the Hugoton asset, I worked on a waterflood design and simulation model. The project was challenging and ambitious, yet there was no shortage of people willing to help by sharing their knowledge and advice. One of the most enjoyable aspects of the internship experience was the immediate integration I felt with all of the other members of the team.
In addition, I really enjoyed meeting many of the other interns located out of the Houston office and we had a lot of fun, both at work and in our leisure time.
