Occidental works with the IPAA/PESA (Independent Petroleum Association of America / Petroleum Equipment and Services Association) Petroleum Academy supporting the Petro Challenge Competition that partners with Texas high schools to boost student knowledge of the oil and gas industry, and provide information and resources on careers in our industry. Held at the University of Houston, the event attracts nearly 400 high school students who compete in various simulations to discover viable volumes of oil and gas while minimizing costs and acting in a socially and environmentally responsible way. Occidental also supports the Petroleum Academy Summer Externship program. This program provides a two-week job shadowing opportunity for future engineering and geosciences students at Occidental's offices in the Houston and Dallas/Fort Worth areas.
Occidental is a proud partner with American Corporate Partners (ACP), a national, non-profit organization dedicated to helping military veterans transition to the private sector through one-on-one career development mentorships and networking opportunities with business leaders.
Occidental is a leadership supporter of HGOco, the Houston Opera's community collaboration initiative that brings performances to over 100,000 students, families and educators each season.
The Houston Methodist Scholars program offers specialty care to communities throughout the greater Houston area. Occidental contributed to establish an Occidental Petroleum/Houston Methodist Scholar award to recognize an outstanding fellow or resident annually or biannually and to provide means for additional medical education as well as equipment to improve patient care and research-related endeavors.
Occidental's sponsorship and support of the Enhanced Oil Recovery Laboratory, at Texas Tech University, allows students and faculty members to trial and demonstrate novel techniques in extracting oil and gas that will significantly improve the economic performance of oil fields. As an industry leader in CO2 flooding enhanced oil recovery, Occidental strengthens the long-standing relationship with Texas Tech by helping students develop innovative skills in a first-class facility.
In Qatar, Occidental is the principal sponsor of the Doha Film Institute's Ajyal Youth Film Festival. Building on the Doha Film Institute's history of community-based programming, Ajyal provides interactive spaces for children to learn about film technology as well as other cultures, times and places.
Since 2012, Oxy Qatar has been a strategic partner in the "Your Health First" program launched by Weill Cornell Medical College and Qatar's Supreme Council of Health. The program promotes a healthy lifestyle in Qatar through education and preventative healthcare.
Oxy Qatar supports development opportunities for students at Texas A&M University Qatar, including student projects, the annual Senior Project Day and support for the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Student Chapter at Texas A&M, Qatar.
Occidental Oman's partnership with Takatuf Oman will sponsor five Omani students to participate in Takatuf Scholars Enrichment Program and two will receive scholarships under the Takatuf International Scholarships. Occidental Oman aims to identify bright, motivated and academically accomplished Omani students and help them become innovative, productive, lifelong learners and potential leaders.
Occidental Oman commenced a multi-year partnership with Outward Bound Oman to support courses that improve the leadership and life skills of students. Through the partnership, Occidental will support up to 72 students each year through 2018.
Occidental Oman maintains strong ties to sports and athletics competition. Occidental Oman launched a new initiative to support Oman Sail, an all-female sail team. Occidental Oman is extending its support for training 40 girls from Oman's public schools.
Occidental of Abu Dhabi sponsors the Emirates Foundation's national Think Science Fair, a strategic platform for connecting aspiring young scientists and engineers with the business community. The fair, which drew more than 8,500 visitors, features exhibits and activities designed to improve the public's knowledge, understanding and perception of science and technology. Occidental employees also served as judges at the event.
Occidental Colombia is a strategic partner of the Alcaraván Foundation. In Arauca, Occidental and the Foundation supports a microfinance program that provides small entrepreneurs with development tools and financial assistance. In 2015, the program distributed nearly $2.9 million in microloans, benefitting 2,872 local entrepreneurs from low-income areas.
In partnership with the Association of Oil Industry Foundations (Asociación de Fundaciones Petroleras - AFP), Occidental Colombia helps to strengthen small-to-medium-sized enterprises and entrepreneurs in Arauca through business skills training and micro-credit programs.
Occidental Colombia works with Ecopetrol and local authorities to provide electric power for families in Arauca. More than 40 families now have reliable access to electricity that provides significant social and environmental benefits, allowing the families to preserve food and cook without the need to use wood fuel from local natural resources.
Occidental Colombia provides regular financial, organizational and administrative support to the Committee for Evaluation and Follow-up of Royalties Investment (CSIR). CSIR is an initiative with Ecopetrol, local business and civic organizations that promotes transparency, accountability and civic oversight of oil royalty investments.
