Each business segment of Occidental
has a program covering the functional areas of worker and public
safety, industrial hygiene, environment, and process risk management
that achieves a consistent standard of care worldwide for people
and the environment. These programs:
1. Integrate HES considerations into business
planning and decision-making processes.
2. Include a management system designed to maintain
compliance with all applicable health, safety and environmental
laws and regulations.
3. Verify compliance through self-monitoring programs
and regular facility assessments and, in a timely manner, correct
any deficiencies noted.
4. Correct, or discontinue participation in, any
activity that poses an unacceptable risk to human health or safety
or has an unacceptable environmental impact.
5. Responsibly address issues related to past
operating or waste management practices.
6. Establish appropriate design, construction,
operating and maintenance programs and standards to minimize risks,
reduce releases and waste, increase energy efficiency, and conserve
natural resources.
7. Include programs to analyze and mitigate risks,
investigate significant HES incidents, and prepare for and respond
to emergencies.
8. Train and empower employees to take individual
responsibility for HES activities related to their job performance.
9. Communicate to employees, contractors, customers,
the surrounding communities and others who may be affected the
potential hazards associated with its facilities, activities and
products and the protective measures that have been implemented.
10. Encourage participation in the development
of effective HES laws and regulations.
11. Develop constructive relationships with communities,
environmental, trade and technical organizations, and other interested
