Occidental tracks energy
efficiency through an intensity index that uses revenue as a
normalizing factor. Performance of the index, relative to the
1995 baseline year (where the index is set to a value of 1.0),
shows that efforts focused on improving energy efficiency have
yielded an eight-percent improvement since 1996.
Energy use per
pound of production in OxyChem has decreased by more than 40
percent since 1995, as investments have been made to conserve
energy and implement cogeneration projects. At oil and gas
operations, energy demand per barrel of oil produced generally
increases over time as more intensive reservoir production procedures,
such as water flooding and carbon dioxide injection, are instituted
to recover greater amounts of oil and gas from existing fields.
