Exploring for and producing oil and natural gas requires drilling wells – often more than a mile deep – to bring oil and natural gas from deep underground to the surface. Oxy drills more than a thousand wells each year at our operations in the United States, the Middle East region and Latin America. Excellence in well design and drilling execution are key to our production success.

Once a well is drilled, steel pipe is placed in it to keep the hole open for the life of the well. To complete the well, holes are shot through the pipe and cement is used to seal the formations that hold the oil and gas. Smaller, removable pipe, called “tubing,” is then installed to contain the flow of oil and gas to the surface. The tubing protects the permanent steel pipe from wear and corrosion.

Among the techniques Oxy uses to enhance the flow capacity of completions is hydraulic fracturing, which is a core competency within the company. We use a variety of equipment and methods, such as artificial lift, to ensure that the fluids are brought to the surface efficiently.

Drilling

Safely, accurately and efficiently drilling wells deep in the earth is a challenging task. Oxy’s drilling professionals consistently meet this challenge by using state-of-the-art technologies and optimized equipment for each job; continually improving operating practices; and leveraging the expertise within our global drilling community of employees, contractors and suppliers. This enables the company to deliver superior drilling efficiency everywhere we operate.

Oxy regularly upgrades its rig fleet to ensure safe, fast and cost-effective drilling. Innovative approaches such as wired drill pipe, multi-lateral completions and casing while drilling help us to develop resources effectively. In addition, our well control school has been recognized as one of the best in the industry.

Hydraulic Fracturing

Hydraulic fracturing is a well stimulation process that allows oil and natural gas to flow more freely from underground formations. Used safely and effectively by Oxy and its contractors for many years, hydraulic fracturing has been a routine practice in the oil and gas industry for more than six decades.


 

Oxy operates large gas fields, such as this one in the Piceance Basin in Colorado, where fracturing is necessary to develop the reserves from more than 1,000 wells. Much equipment is required to perform fracture stimulation, which increases individual well rates up to 10 times what they would be without these treatments.
