what interns have to say ...

Huxley Song, Engineer -
Reservoir Management Team

Graduate - The University of Texas at Austin
BS - Petroleum Engineering

Now a full-time Occidental employee, Huxley Song participated in Occidental's internship program in 2001 and 2002.

"Both internship's with Oxy were enjoyable learning experiences, but very different. I progressed from an observatory role in Liberal, Kansas in 2001, to a contributory role at Elk Hills in 2002. Liberal is probably one of the best domestic fields in which a training engineer can begin to understand some of the basic concepts and operations within the oil patch. I was introduced to general field equipment and operations while working on several small engineering projects.

My internship at Elk Hills gave me an opportunity to give back to Oxy by working on economical projects. My project involved a post-mortem of WSOZ's existing horizontal wells, which had widely variable production performance records. My analysis explained the well's performance, and we concluded that wells were being placed too close together, causing production to decline. In some instances, I recommended vertical wells instead of horizontal wells because of their ability to intersect and produce from more reservoir layers."

Matthew Campbell, Geologist
Oxy Permian - Integrated Reservoir Management Group
University of Texas at Austin
M.S. - Geology

Now a full-time Occidental employee, Matthew Campbell participated in Occidental's internship program in 2003.

Internship project - A Geologic Investigation of CO2 Flood Pattern Performance, Cogdell Canyon Reef Unit, Permian Basin. "The goal of my project was to find a geologic understanding of why some patterns performed better than others in a field undergoing CO2 flooding. While identifying "thief zones", where injected CO2 was being lost, I worked with Oxy's reservoir engineers to understand the production data.

The primary benefit of my internship with Oxy was that is provided a chance to work with other disciplines in the oil and gas industry. As a geoscientist, I now realize the importance working engineers and petrophysicists have in this business. My project exposed me to new terminology, techniques, and a new way of looking at data I thought I knew. This project also allowed me to contribute back to my team using the specific knowledge I gained in school."

Ashley Cooper, Intern 2003, 2004
Junior - University of Oklahoma

Ashley Cooper's internship encompassed a variety of disciplines in the oil and gas division of Occidental. During her internship in 2003, Cooper worked in the Lease Records, Division Orders and Hugoton Asset Group learning the procedures and processes of oil and gas land management.

She received hands-on experience searching courthouse records for lease and title ownership, as well as visiting producing production sites in Oxy's Permian Basin operations. "The experience enhanced my professional and academic skills within the oil and gas industry by exposing me to multiple aspects of the land sector. I am very thankful for the extremely beneficial and positive experience I had at Oxy."

Joi Johnson, Brine Process Engineer
Muscle Shoals
Florida A & M University
B.S. Chemical Engineering

Now a full-time employee, Joi participated in OxyChem's internship program in 2002.

"The OxyChem summer internship program is such a wonderful opportunity to broaden one's educational and professional life. As a program participant, I was able to relate textbook instruction with field education, providing me a greater understanding of how to apply both facets of my education to my chemical engineering position at OxyChem.

The intership program not only made it easier to transition into my full-time position, but I also gained a comprehensive understanding of the projects assigned to me from start to finish. The relationships forged with other interns and other Oxy employees have proven invaluable. Knowledge and networking is taken to a higher level through the intern program. It's a great experience."

RaeAnn Joseph, Associate Process Engineer
Muscle Shoals
Florida A & M University
B.S. Chemical Engineering

Now a full-time employee, RaeAnn participated in OxyChem's internship program in 2001 and 2002.

"My first exposure to chemical engineering was during my summer internship at OxyChem's Muscle Shoals plant in 2001. The program allowed me to apply my classroom studies to the real-life experience of working closely in a cell-room process environment. In doing so, I was exposed to a very intense safety program during my first two weeks.

The following summer I returned and focused on creating an electronic pipe specifications database. Both internships provided an excellent foundation and head start for my first year as a full-time chemical engineering employee at OxyChem in 2003.
